Dr. Park currently teaches architectural design, theory, and history as a professor in the Department of Architecture at Inha University, Korea. Prior to joining Inha University, he taught in the School of Architecture at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and then, became an associate professor with tenure. He earned his BS in architecture from Inha University, Korea, and his MA and Ph.D. degrees in architecture from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

He served as corresponding editor of the Nexus Network Journal: Architecture and Mathematics, 2004-5, and advisory board member of The International Society for the Interdisciplinary Study of Symmetry (ISIS-Symmetry). He is currently an editorial member of the Journal of Asian Architecture and Building Engineering.

He is the first recipient of the R. M. Schindler Fellowship of the Beata Inaya Trust Fund, 1996/7, and twice recipient of the Chancellor's Dissertation Fellowship, 1998/00. He worked with architectural firms in Korea. He was honored as a recipient of the University of Hawaii “Board of Regent’s Medal for Excellence in Teaching,” in 2002, and received national recognition as the 2003 recipient for “The ACSA/AIAS New Faculty Teaching Award,” The 91st ACSA (Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture) Annual Meeting in Louisville, Kentucky, March 14-17, 2003. He also received the Journal of Asian Architecture and Building Engineering (JAABE) Best Paper Award, 2005. In Korea, he also received various awards including Moo Ae Awards from Architectural Institute of Korea in 2009 and Best Teaching Award at Inha University in 2009. Recently, he was honored as a recipient of the the Chief Commissioner's Award of the Presidential Commission on Architecture Policy from the Korean Government in 2011.

His academic research includes The Architecture of R. M. Schindler (1887-1953), Modern and Contemporary Architectural Design, History and Theory, Architectural Composition, Design and Computation, Fundamentals of Architectonics: Proportion, Symmetry, and Compartition, Shape Grammars, Digital Media and fabrication.

Dr. Park has acted as PI or main researcher for several funded research programs in the field. His research has been published or forthcoming in various refereed journals, including Architectural Research Quarterly(arq), Environment and Planning B, Nexus Network Journal, Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, Journal of Architectural and Planning Research, Journal of Architectural Education, Journal of Asian Architecture and Building Engineering, The Mathematical Intelligencer, The Journal of Architecture, Open House International, Building and Environment, etc. His book review of Preston Scott Cohen's Contested Symmetries and Other Predicaments in Architecture (Princeton Architectural Press, 2001) is published in the Nexus Network Journal: Architecture and Mathematics, (Spring, 2002). He published two design books including "Expired Housin"g in 2008, and "Seoul Fortress Wall: Boundary and Beyond" in 2010 (Spacetime).His design studio and students' works at University of Hawaii at Manoawere featured in “Innovative Architecture: What lies ahead,” Building Industry Magazine, October 2002; and “Architecture of Human Settlement,” Building Industry Magazine, April 2005.

He has directed various international workshops including "Paramodern/Springtecture" with Shuhei Endo(Architect, Japan) in 2005, The Visual Body and The moving Body (University of Tokyo) in 2006, "Expired Housing" with Mark Mack in 2007, "Design Materiality: New Concepts for Exploration" with Thomas Schroepfer (Havard University) in 2008, "Recollecting forward in Seoul : Old Wall, New City; Old City, New Wall" with Eric Owen Moss in 2008, "Floating spirits" with BIG(Architect, Denmark) in 2009, "Haiti Emergency Shelter" with Shigeru Ban in 2010, "Critical Mass" with Obuchi Yusuke (University of Tokyo) in 2010, "Ceramic Futures" with Martin Bechtold (Harvard University) in 2011, and also a workhop with Ken Yeang in December 2011. The output of each workshop was printed in a booklet format. And two books are published in Korea by Spacetime (Seoul), including "Expired Housin"g in 2008, and "Seoul Fortress Wall: Boundary and Beyond" in 2010.

 

A Short Biography
박진호 교수

인하대학교 공과대학 건축공학과 졸업 후, UCLA 건축대학원에서 석사 및 박사를 받고 미국 하와이주립대학교 건축대학에서 조교수 및 부교수(종신교수)를 거쳐 현재 인하대학교 건축학부의 교수로 재직 중이다. 전공은 건축계획 및 설계, 건축디자인 및 방법론, 이론 및 역사, Digital Design and Fabrication 등 이다. 2001년도에는 제4회 아시아 태평양 건축 심포지엄 의장을 역임하였고 Nexus Network Journal (BIRKHAUS)의 편집위원도 역임하였고 현재는 Journal of Asian Architecture and Building Engineering 편집위원이다. Architectural Research Quarterly (arq), Environment and Planning B, Nexus Network Journal, Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, Journal of Architectural and Planning Research, Journal of Architectural Education, The Journal of Architecture, Open House International, Building and Environment, and The Mathematical Intelligencer 등의 세계 유수의 저널에 다수의 논문을 발표하고 있다. 2002년 하와이대학교 평의회 최고교육상 수상을 수상하였고, 2003년에는 미국 건축학회 (ACSA) 신임교육상 수상, 2005년에는 JAABE (Journal of Asian Architecture and Building Engineering)의 최고논문상, 2009년에는 대한건축학회 무애건축상 및 인하대학교 우수교육상을 수상하였고,그리고 2011년 국가건축정책위원장 표창장을 수상하였다.
